God's Foot Soldiers

In March 2010, Fr. Tony and I traveled with a film crew from PBS to our mission in South Africa.  We were filming for an episode in the Visionaries series on PBS, which highlights the good work of non-profits across the world.  This episode was dedicated to the St. Thomas of Villanova province of the Augustinians, and focused on the ministries in downtown Philadelphia and the missions of South Africa.  Last summer, the documentary began airing on PBS stations around the country.

The episode, titled "God's Foot Soldiers," has served as a useful educational piece on the work of the Augustinians.  Viewings have been held across the province at parishes, schools, and fundraisers.  This week, Fr. Tony and I attended a viewing at Malvern Preparatory School in Malvern PA.  The entire high school assembled in their state-of-the-art theater to watch the 25 minute episode.  Afterwards, Fr. Tony spent time discussing the call of the Augustinians to South Africa, as a way to share the Augustinian charism of community to a country recently removed from Apartheid.  I offered a reflection on the African word "ubuntu" which concerns our inter-connectedness in humanity.
