| |
Vincent Altimare, OSA, on January 18, 1975, suffered a massive and fatal heart attack a few paces before reaching the home of his parents. His lovable personality and priestly dedication endeared him to all who came in contact with him, especially the young men who became candidates for the Vice Province. At the time of his death he was only 34 years old. Fr. Vince was born on February 5, 1939 in Philadelphia, PA. He was baptized by Fr. Louis Diorio, OSA., at Saint Nicholas of Tolentine Church, Philadelphia, PA. He grew up in this Augustinian parish and entered the Order. He was professed on September 10, 1961. He was ordained to the priesthood on August 24, 1968. Fr. Vince was first stationed as teacher and Prior at Saint Augustine Prep School in Richland, NJ. Subsequently, he became pastor of Holy Name Parish in Camden, NJ, in 1971, and afterwards returned to his teaching post at Saint Augustine’s Prep School. He was also Director of Vocations and Formation in the Philadelphia Vice Province. During the last 16 months of his life he also assisted Fr. Peter Toscani, pastor of Our Lady of Pompeii Parish, East Vineland, NJ on Sundays and in that Parish’s catechetical program. Three concelebrated Masses of the Resurrection were offered for him January 20, 21, and 22 at Our Lady of Pompeii Parish, Holy Name Parish, and at Saint Nicholas of Tolentine Parish in Philadelphia. At the first viewing and prayers, in spite of a snow storm, over 400 people attended. On this occasion Fr. Peter Toscani gave the eulogy. On the following morning Fr. Toscani presided at the Funeral Liturgy and Fr. Stephen LaRosa, the Headmaster of Saint Augustine’s Prep School, gave the eulogy. The Bishop of Camden, George Guilfoyle, spoke words of praise for Fr. Vince, who was one of the Bishop’s diocesan consultors. Fr. Vince’s classmate, Fr. Richard DeFulgentiis, was the main Celebrant at the funeral Mass in Philadelphia, and Fr. Toscani gave the eulogy. Fr. Altimare was interred in Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, PA, at the request of his elderly and heart-broken parents. † |
