Cause for Father Atkinson in the News

The Cause for Father Bill Atkinson has received interest, as two recent newspaper articles attest. Father Atkinson, who was raised in Upper Darby and attended Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel Hill, Pa., died in 2006. Father Atkinson was injured in a tobogganing accident as a novice, leaving him a quadriplegic. After hospitalization and rehabilitation, he returned to his studies and with a dispensation from Pope Paul VI, he was ordained a priest.

The Augustinian Postulator General, Josef Sciberras, O.S.A., who handles the causes of beatification for the Order of Saint Augustine, met with Augustinian friars, family, ralatives, and friends of Father Atkinson several months ago, to determine if there was ample evidence to merit opening a cause for his sainthood. After listening to the testimony of those present, a Cause for Father Atkinson was opened.
