Charles R. Flynn was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, of Charles Flynn and Julia Coghlan on June 13, 1915. He attended Saint Patrick Parish School and then Lincoln Catholic High School, Jersey City. In September 1934, he entered Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York, and was received into the novitiate on 9 September 1935. He professed simple vows on September 10, 1936 and three years later, solemn vows. He studied at Villanova College and earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 1940 and later a M.A. degree in education and an M.S.L.S. in library science. He pursued theological studies at Augustinian College, Washington, DC, and was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop McNamara at Trinity College, Washington, DC, on May 20, 1953.
Father Flynn’s first assignment was to California, both San Diego and Ojai, from 1944 to 1952. In 1952 he was assigned to Saint Joseph Friary at Monsignor Bonner High School, Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania. In 1959 Father Flynn taught at Archbishop Carroll High School, Washington, DC, and in 1962, was reassigned to Saint Joseph, Drexel Hill, where he served as vice rector of Monsignor Bonner High School. In 1970 he had the following assignments: Saint Thomas of Villanova, Rosemont, Pa., Malvern Preparatory School, and Resurrection of Our Lord, Dania, Florida. From 1981 onward he ministered at Cardinal Gibbons High School, Fort Lauderdale, Fl., at Monsignor Pace High School, Miami, Fl., and Saint Thomas University, Miami. In 1995, because of ill health, he was assigned to Saint Thomas Monastery, Villanova, where he died on November 11, 1998.
Father Flynn was a kind and gentle man, always interested in the welfare of others. In his various duties throughout his life he showed himself to be the perfect gentleman. To the students he was always helpful and accommodating and placed at their service his talents, especially in the area of library science.
