Patrick Augustine Carr, son of Patrick Carr and Mary Burke Carr, was born on August 2, 1847, in Headford, County Galway, Ireland. He was baptized on August 15, 1847, in the church of St. Mary there. He entered Villanova College in 1876 from Amesbury, Massachusetts, where a number of Irish families had settled. On September 26, 1878, he entered the novitiate at Villanova, professed first vows on September 27, 1879, and solemn vows on September 27, 1882. On December 2, 1882, Patrick was ordained to the priesthood with Michael M. Fogarty and John T. Emmet, by Bishop Jeremiah F. Shanahan of Harrisburg, Pa., in the “Gymnasium Church” at Villanova.
On December 6, 1882, Father Carr received his first assignment to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Lawrence, Mass., where he served for one year. In October 1883, he was assigned to St. Paul Parish in Mechanicville, New York, and in 1884, he became an assistant in St. James Parish in Carthage, N.Y. His five years at that parish were marked by his presence for the opening of the new parish school and the growing sodalities. Upon his transfer from St. James Parish, The Carthage Republican reported the following on Tuesday, July 16, 1889. “While in our midst he made many friends irrespective of class or creed and has always had a kind word and pleasant smile for everyone, and old and young will miss his accustomed kindness and pleasant word.” On July 15, 1889, Father Carr reported to St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish, Atlantic City, New Jersey. The following year he returned to Carthage where he was appointed pastor and prior of St. James Parish until November 1894. Father Carr was assigned that year as pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Greenwich, N.Y., and remained there until 1900, when he resigned due to failing health.
On Easter Monday, April 8, 1901, Father Carr died in Greenwich, N.Y., at age 53. He is buried in the Augustinian plot in St. John Cemetery, North Troy, New York.
