Emmet Ambrose Flynn, son of James Flynn and Emma Gormley, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 8, 1897. He received his education in Philadelphia’s parochial schools and at Villanova Prep. He entered the novitiate at Villanova on June 24, 1917, and professed simple vows on July 23, 1918. He was solemnly professed on June 25, 1922. On September 22, 1923, he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Michael Crane at Villanova. During the following year he was a student priest at Augustinian College in Washington.
Father Flynn’s first assignment was to Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, New York. After three years of teaching in the House of Postulants he was sent to Assumption Parish in Waterford, New York. In 1928, he was assigned as a teacher at Cascia Hall, Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he remained for the next three years. During the year 1931 he did parish work at Andover. The following two years he spent teaching in St. Augustine’s, San Diego, and Saint Rita’s, Chicago, respectively.
He was retired to the Monastery at Villanova in 1934 because of poor health. In spite of this handicap he taught in the College and at St. Mary’s Hall until 1938. In 1939 he was transferred to Detroit, and he lived there until the time of his death. Father Flynn died in Detroit, Michigan, on August 19, 1941 at the age of 44, as a result of complications following surgery. He is buried in the Community Cemetery at Villanova.
