Since the day of our baptisms, every one of us has been on a journey that includes our vocation to grow daily in holiness. This journey will culminate in our arrival at the Heavenly Banquet in the Kingdom.

Bishop William Jones, after serving 14 years as bishop of San Juan, Puerto Rico, died at the age of 56 in St. Joseph Hospital, Philadelphia and was buried on the 23rd in the community cemetery, Villanova.

In a letter addressed to the Prior General, permission was given by the Congregation of Religious to use the vernacular in the recitation of the Divine Office. The Province Newsletter indicated that houses wishing to do so were to so indicate by a secret vote of the community.

The Definitory minutes of this day record that “Rev. Frs. L. Spirali, P. Hufnagel and E. McCarthy, whose former convents were confiscated by the communists in Cuba, were assigned to the only convent in the state of Florida, Our Lady of the Angels in Jacksonville on January 8, 1962.”

The Christ in today’s gospel seems to be somewhat out of character with the picture we have of the loving Lord who is the good shepherd and divine physician. The words we heard in today’s gospel are rather tough and threatening. Yet, Christ uses such strong words because he wants to emphasize our goal – eternal life.

Brother Dennis Gallagher, the last of the early members of the Villanova community, died on this day. He and Brother Thomas McDonnell had helped build the old study hall chapel of the college in 1844.
