Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time • Year A
Jesus is enticing us. He knows humanity. He is one of us. He knows the appeal of wealth. Our ears perk up at the mere mention of it. Jesus uses such images to grab our attention. Once He has our attention, He redirects it to that which is true wealth, to what we truly desire, that is, “the kingdom of heaven.”

What am I doing to make this a better world? Am I a member of a small group which is dedicated to improve the corner of the world where God put me? Granted, I work hard for my family and myself, but am I doing anything for God? What proportion of my efforts and time do I devote to others?

We have here, or so it seems to me, one of the hidden gems of the gospel, Jesus offering to take over control of our lives, if we permit him. Do you often feel angry, tense, impatient, that things are out of control? If you do, today’s message is really worth pondering.
Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time • Year A
The gospel warns us three times to shape up or walk the plank. But the story reminds us that every Sunday during Mass, just before communion time, we confess our unworthiness when we say, Lord, I am not worthy to receive you. But that’s not all we say, for immediately we add, But only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

Jesus then came among us to show the way and imparted this mission to his followers who have passed it on to us. On this Father’s Day holiday we call to mind the exhortation to give as we have received. Our parents taught us the love of God, disciplined us in ways reminiscent of the eagle and its young. The message: to care about others as God has cared for us.
