Archbishop Patrick Ryan dedicated the basement chapel to serve as the first church of the new Saint Rita’s Parish, Philadelphia, established to care for both Italian and โ€œAmericanโ€ parishioners. Provincial Martin Geraghty celebrated the Mass.

This Day in Province History: September 24, 1926

Cascia Hall in Tulsa, Oklahoma opened on this day in 1926, with an enrollment of 25 students. The care of souls with fixed parish limits was part of the original agreement with the bishop, Francis C. Kelley.

Archbishop Richard Cushing dedicated “the Augustinian College of Merrimack Valley” in the presence of the Prior General, Joseph Hickey, and provincial and founder, Mortimer Sullivan. Fr. Vincent McQuade was its first president.

This Day in Province History: September 20, 1942

This date marked the opening of the 100th anniversary celebrations of the founding of Villanova College, including a Solemn Pontifical Mass offered by Cardinal Denis Dougherty with 8 bishops and several hundred priests, religious sisters and 2,000 faithful in attendance.

On this date, Prior General, Engelbert Eberhard, wrote to Provincial Secretary, Henry Greenlee, offering personal condolences at the sudden death of Prior Provincial, Joseph Dougherty, and two weeks later he appointed Greenlee Rector Provincial.

Friar John Possidius O’Dwyer celebrated Mass in the parlor of the Old Rudolph Farm House and blessed the house at what is now known as Villanova. Studies and classes began the following day. The student body numbered 17 young men.

The Colegio San Agustin in Cuba was founded on this day in 1901. It was originally attached to the chapel of San Agustin, and had as its original President and Vice-President, Frs. Edward Moynihan, OSA and Thomas Healy, OSA, respectively.
