This date marked the opening of the 100th anniversary celebrations of the founding of Villanova College, including a Solemn Pontifical Mass offered by Cardinal Denis Dougherty with 8 bishops and several hundred priests, religious sisters and 2,000 faithful in attendance.

This Day in Province History: September 17, 1843

Friar John Possidius O’Dwyer celebrated Mass in the parlor of the Old Rudolph Farm House and blessed the house at what is now known as Villanova. Studies and classes began the following day. The student body numbered 17 young men.
