David Joseph Kelley, O.S.A.

1942 – 2024 (June 28)

Fr. David J. Kelley, O.S.A., was born on July 30, 1942, in Staten Island, New York, the son of Arthur Chester Kelley and Alice Josephine Murphy. He was their only child. He was baptized on August 16, 1942, at Sacred Heart Church, Staten Island, New York. He attended the Academy of Saint Dorothy from 1948-1956, and Curtis High School, Staten Island, New York 1956-1960. He received a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1966 from St. John’s University, Jamaica, New York and worked at General Telephone Company and for an insurance firm before entering Augustinian Academy on Staten Island as a Post Graduate Postulant in 1966.

After completing his post graduate postulancy, he was received into the Order as a novice on September 2, 1967, at St. Mary’s Hall, Villanova, Pennsylvania, and after a year at Good Counsel Novitiate, New Hamburg, New York, he professed first vows on September 3, 1968. He did his Theological studies at Washington Theological Union from 1970-1973, residing at Augustinian College, Washington, DC.

He professed solemn vows on July 30, 1972, and was ordained to the priesthood on December 30, 1973, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Staten Island, New York, by Bishop John Comber, M.M.

Fr. Dave was first assigned to St. Augustine Parish, Andover, Massachusetts as a Deacon in September of 1973, and after his ordination to the priesthood in December of 1973, continued at St. Augustine, Andover, as Associate Pastor. In July of 1976, he was assigned as Associate Pastor at St. Augustine’s Parish, in Troy, New York, and remained in that position until July of 1988, when he was transferred to St. Joseph’s Greenwich, New York as Pastor. In July of 1997, he was assigned to Assumption/St. Paul Parish in Mechanicville, New York, as Associate Pastor, and in December of 2002, he became Pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Waterford, New York.

During his time at St. Mary’s, Fr. Dave was responsible for planning the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the dedication of the church, the 60th Anniversary of St. Mary’s School and the 170th Anniversary of the establishment of the parish. He conducted a very successful capital campaign which enabled him to have the church painted and refurbished for the anniversary celebration. During his tenure and under his very able administration several other projects were accomplished by Fr. Dave.

Fr. Dave was known as a kind and gentle person, and an excellent listener. He sought to follow in the spirit of St. Augustine, serving the people of God who were entrusted to his care, by putting the common good over his own personal good.

Fr. Dave died peacefully at St. Mary’s rectory, early in the morning of Friday, June 28, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. May he rest in peace.
