1947 – 2025 (May 10)
Edward Joseph Enright, O.S.A., was born on May 16, 1947, in Medford, Massachusetts, the son of Edward J. and Doris V. (Hill) Enright. He had 1 brother and 2 sisters. He was baptized at Saint Agnes Catholic Church, Arlington, Massachusetts, on June 22, 1947. He attended John A. Bishop Elementary School from 1953 to 1959, Arlington Junior High School East from 1959 to 1961, and Arlington Catholic High School from 1961 to 1965. He was received into the Order as a novice on September 9, 1965, and after a year at Good Counsel Novitiate, New Hamburg, New York, he professed first vows on September 10, 1966. He then attended Villanova University from 1966 to 1970, and received his BA in Philosophy. He went to Augustinian College, Washington, DC from 1970 to 1974, and pursued his theological studies at the Catholic University of America, receiving the STB in 1972 and the STL in 1974. He professed solemn vows on January 15, 1972. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 2, 1973, at Saint Agnes Catholic Church, Arlington, Massachusetts, by Bishop Jeremiah F. Minihan, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Boston.
Fr. Ed was first assigned to teach at Saint Nicholas of Tolentine High School in the Bronx, New York from 1974 to 1976, and then was assigned to teach at Msgr. Bonner High School, Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania from 1976 to 1978. From 1978 to 1980 he taught at Villanova University in the Religious Studies Department. From 1980 to 1984 he resided at St. John of Sahagun Friary, Washington, DC, while pursuing full time doctoral studies at the Catholic University of America. From 1984 to 1992, he taught at Merrimack College, North Andover, Massachusetts, and resided at the Monastery of Our Mother of Good Counsel. He received his Doctorate in Sacred Theology in 1991 from the Catholic University of America. In 1992, he began teaching at Villanova University. During that time, he lived at St. Augustine Friary from 1992 to 1994, Fray Luis de Leon Friary from 1994 to 1996, St. Augustine Friary from 1996 to 2002, and St. Joseph Friary, Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, from 2002 to 2008. In November of 2008, he took up residence at Austin House, North Andover, Massachusetts, teaching at Merrimack College. In August of 2013, he moved to St. Augustine Parish, Andover, Massachusetts and continued in his teaching position at Merrimack College. In November of 2023, Fr. Ed moved to St. Thomas of Villanova Monastery, Villanova, Pennsylvania because of health reasons. He loved to read and was always pleasant, even in his illness. He passed away peacefully last May 10, 2025 at St. Thomas of Villanova Monastery.
