Pope Leo XIII in 1893 stated in an encyclical that “if scientists ever prove a truth about nature with irrefutable evidence, let us show that that truth is not opposed to our scripture.” In this challenge to Catholic scientists, Leo XIII indicated that truth about the physical world is accessible through two separate channels: science and revelation. This is a very different worldview from that which has pervaded American academic and popular culture for the past century.

Program Leader: Dr. Dermott J. Mullan
Dr. Mullan is an astrophysicist and Emeritus Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Delaware. Born and educated in Northern Ireland, he earned degrees in physics and mathematics from Queen’s University Belfast before completing his Ph.D. in astronomy at the University of Maryland in 1969. Mullan is also a Catholic writer and educator. He has written on questions of faith and science as well as Catholic life, with work appearing in publications including Homiletic & Pastoral Review, National Catholic Register, New Oxford Review, and Liguorian.
