2026 Knowledge & Wisdom in St. Augustine’s ‘De Doctrina Christiana’ – Friday, October 23

Please join the Lay Augustinians at 6:30 PM on Friday, October 23 for a discussion about faith and science.

Faith and science are commonly seen as being opposed to each other, but the thought of St. Augustine can help us to understand them as complementary through his distinction between knowledge (scientia) and wisdom (sapientia). The Doctor of Grace believed that our knowledge of things points to the wisdom of God, but was ultimately unable to work out just how the two are related to each other. Inspired by Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas would pick up where he left off and provide an answer by showing us how wisdom is the perfection of knowledge.

You may choose to attend this event either via Zoom or in person at the Cascia Center of the National Shrine of St. Rita of Cascia!  The Cascia Center is located at 1166 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, Pa.  A Zoom link will be sent to all registrants in the confirmation email after you register no matter which option you choose, just in case your plans change and you find you can no longer join us in person.

A recording of the event will be available afterwards on the Lay Augustinians’ YouTube page.
