Pray with the Pope: June 2026 Reflections

What was the ministry of Jesus? Some would say it was table fellowship.



Jesus spent a lot of time eating. He ate with sinners, such as the tax collector Matthew. He fed the 5,000. It was while he was eating that Mary Magdalene, a woman of ill repute, washed and dried his feet. It was at the Passover meal, the Last Supper, that Jesus gave us his total commitment of love for all time as he ate his last meal with his disciples and gave us the Eucharist. Even at his birth, eating and feeding were represented by Mary placing him in a manger, the place where animals were fed and nourished. Feeding and the nourishment of food was a part of the life and ministry of Jesus.

Pope Leo is inviting the whole Church to pray with him in April for priests in crisis, asking us to “pray for priests going through moments of crisis in their vocation, that they may find the accompaniment they need and that communities may support them with understanding and prayer.”

As an Augustinian priest in my mid-thirties, I was living with the Quakers in Philadelphia to study nonviolence. It was in the midst of the Vietnam War. To support myself during this sabbatical, I had a job as a substitute teacher in the Philadelphia school system. Once a week or so, I would be called to substitute in a public school to take the place of a teacher who had called in sick that day.

“I will pray for you.” These are the five words that, when put side by side, express the greatest act of kindness. They are an act of love. I know this personally because as a heart transplant patient, I was on the receiving end of many people’s prayers. I used to think, “Why should I pray for you when you can pray for yourself?” I abandoned that selfishness when I realized I needed the prayers of others. I needed to change and so did they. Love, expressed in prayer, is the strongest power in the world.
