Fr. Matthew Carr, newly arrived in Philadelphia only several weeks, and without official endorsement as yet for the founding of the Order, published a handbill containing an appeal for funds, entitled “Address to the Inhabitants of Philadelphia.”

John Possidius O’Dwyer died on this date at the age of 34. At the time of his death he was Commissary General of the Augustinians in the United States, President of Villanova College, and rumored to be named first bishop of the newly created See of Savannah, Georgia.
